Located at 75km from
Medellín, between the areas of El Peñol
and Guatapé, El Peñol Cliff is one of
the major outcrops of granite in Colombia, with an approximate
height of 120 meters.
Surrounded by the Guatape´s Lake, this important
scenery for the practice of water sports has a moderate,
suitable climate for climbing all year long.
There are about 30 routes of all kind, classic, artificial
and sports climbing, with levels from 5.6 to 5.12 US
(5 to 7a French) with loads of smearing.

How to get there: |
|
|
If
you go to Peñol using the route Bogotá
- Medellín, the shortest way will be to
take the detour in the Marinilla area, avoiding
the city of Medellin.
The approach to the climbing routes starts in
the Estadero La Mona (picture), 9kms after the
town of El Peñol, walking by a trail that
leads you to the rocks in about 15mins.

What to
take with you: |
With
quickdraws, a 50m rope and good smearing climbing
shoes you will be able to climb all the sport
climbing routes. A whole set of cams and nuts
will be necessary to try the traditional routes.
There are also some artificial climbing routes,
and for those you can also take with you your
micro and steel nuts, microfriends and hooks.
Take loads of water and UV protection. The best
time to climb is either in the morning or after
3pm, due to the intense sun and the very few possibilities
of finding a shade. |
